Mr. Alexandru Muntoiu held a presentation about the natural organic fertilizers used in ecological agriculture. Thus, he spoke about manure, manure platform, the fermentation stages of manure and the accessibility of the nutrients from manure.

The next presentation was held by Eng. Romeo Capatina who told the farmers about the experiment he made in 2012 on a surface on which he cultivated wheat. During this experiment he monitored the production changes occurring under the use of an organic fertilizer compared to the use of the classical fertilizers. He explained to the present farmers all the the technological steps he had made during this experiment along with details regarding the composition of the organic fertilizer and the chemical ones, the quantities used from each of them, the type of seeds he used, the climatic conditions. Mr. Capatina concluded his presentation by saying thar the organic fertilizer has beneficial effects for soils (thus avoiding the chemical pollutants that can help increase the poisoning of the sea), and for plants (which grows more vigorous and give a raise of production even in harsh climatic conditions).

The farmers were very interested in Mr. Capatina’s study case and had many questions about the organic fertilizer he used.

The farmers were open to this idea and they spoke about the fertilizers they use in their farms and their technological processes they have. Mr. Capatina accentuated the necessity of using ecological fertilizers specifying that after he made the experiment on his soils he concluded that the land crops don’t need any other fertilizer for a period of time. He also highlighted theneed for improving quality of Dobrogea soil because, besides the fact that have been extensively exploited during the past 50 years, they are facing now with climate change and pollution, which resulted in accelerated and intense erosion processes.

The second trainer who spoke was Prof. Dr. Karen Ghazaryan who continued the presentation from the other day about other examples of good practices made in Republic of Armenia. He spoke about “Azotseovit-1”, a universal complex biological fertilizer that enriches the soil with biologically active nitrogen and contributing to higher yields of up to 60%.          Mr. Prof. Dr. Gurgen Aleksanyan started the fourth day of training with the presentation of the organic agriculture development ways in the Republic of Armenia. He highlighted that it is necessary to develop a long-term program for the transition from intensive farming to alternative farming system. Only the creation of a legal framework, development of implementation mechanisms, fragmented small farms cooperation gives opportunity to gradually, without reducing the output of agricultural production, crossing from intensive farming to organic or alternative farming systems.

After the coffee break, Mr. Eng. Romeo Capatina was invited to talk about good practices measures in ecological agriculture. Thus, he spoke about the importance of the use of organic fertilizers and also about the measures that farmers need to take for a correct application of fertilizers.

In the end of his speech, Mr. Capatina presented the measures for conservation and improvement of the soil physical quality and the measures to combat water pollution with nitrates caused by fertilizers during irrigation.

After he finished the presentation he invited all the farmers to attend to a short conversation with the trainers. The discussions have been directed to the difficulties encounter by farmers in their agriculture practices.

9 10

At the end of the discussions the participants were asked to complete the post training questionnaires regarding the training session, trainers and the information received about ecological agriculture.

Asistant of Professor Dr. Hilal Yıldız, Gümüşhane University, held the second presentation which was about “Nitrate and Nitrite Segregation and Human Health Effects”. She highlighted that the pollution with nitrates is caused through the introduction of excessive amounts of nitrogen to surface and ground waters, mainly as a result of agricultural practices. Excessive accumulation of oxidized nitrogen in the form of nitrates may result in high concentrations of nitrates in the groundwater, which in some cases may exceed the 50 mg/l limit for water consumption. Due to the cumulative character of nitrates in groundwater, concentrations higher than 25 mg/l should be treated with concern, calling for preventive actions. In surface waters, particularly lakes and closed gulfs, excessive accumulation of nitrogen as well as phosphorus may lead to eutrophication, with adverse impact, due the proliferation of algae and their by-products, on fish, oxygen levels and amenity value. Water contamination caused by the presence of excessive amounts of nitrates washed out from inorganic fertilizers. These compounds cause eutrophication and are suspected in instances of blood poisoning in infants and stomach cancer in older persons.
